WILLEMSTAD, CURACAO (February 25, 2009) - Covering 1,161 miles of hazardous Alaskan wilderness, with punishing sub-zero temperatures, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race clearly deserves its title as the Last Great Race on Earth. With just days to go until the start of the race on Sunday 8th March 2009, pinnaclesports today announced odds on this unique test of human and canine endurance.
Iditarod commemorates an historic run using sled dogs in 1925 to deliver lifesaving diphtheria serum to Nome, (the race finish), and every Iditarod winner in its 36 history is regarded as a hero.

The leading sports betting site on the Internet, pinnaclesports currently lists the back to back two time defending Iditarod champion, Lance Mackey as the betting favourite with odds of 1.833* (bet $100 to return $183). Cancer survivor, Mackey also won the 1,000 mile Yukon Quest just weeks before his 2007 victory, a feat considered impossible by many… then showed it was no fluke by repeating the double in 2008. Mackey’s decision not to compete in the 2009 Yukon Quest, raised some eyebrows, and his great rival Jeff King, is one of the most likely mushers to take advantage should Mackey have lost his appetite. King – a four time Iditarod winner - pushed him all the way in 2008, but the 53 year old was literally caught napping, as Mackey pushed on, while his rival slept. King has vowed not to let that happen again, and is listed as second favourite at pinnaclesports with odds of 7.450* (bet $100 to return $745).
The two Canadians listed in the Iditarod market make interesting claims. Hans Gatt, is expected to be a live challenger having made the tough decision to drop out midway through this year’s Yukon Quest, because his team was running so well. Gatt never better than sixth in Iditarod believes this is his best chance for success, he has odds of 16.010* (bet $100 to return $1,601), while Sebastian Schnuelle took full advantage of Gatt's withdrawl to win the 2009 Yukon Quest in a record time. Schnuelle can be backed at 21.020* (bet $100 to return $2,102).
“With entrants competing both against each other and the unforgiving elements, Iditarod is a unique sporting challenge that truly justifies the tag of the Last Great Race on Earth”, said a spokesperson for PinnacleSports.com. “At pinnaclesports, we pride ourselves on offering the most competitive odds on the widest range of betting markets available, but we are always looking for unique markets and Iditarod certainly fits the bill.”
